Tuesday, Oct 6, 2009 @02:44pm CDT (Washington, DC) -- A date set by President Obama for closing the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will probably be missed.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says, quote, "It's going to be difficult to make the January 22nd deadline." Holder wasn't specific about the reason for the delay, but there have been problems finding countries willing to take cleared detainees. Late last month, there were still 220 inmates at the facility and only a handful had been relocated to other nations. Efforts to open U.S. prisons to the detainees have been rebuffed by individual states and rejected by many members of Congress. Holder didn't provide a new target date for closing Gitmo.
