Tuesday, Oct 13, 2009 @09:17am CDT (Moscow) -- Iran's nuclear ambitions got a lot of attention today as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Russian leaders in Moscow.
Clinton was expected to seek assurances from the Kremlin for additional sanctions if the Islamic Republic fails to hold up its end of a deal not to pursue nuclear weapons. But in a joint news conference with her Russian counterpart after the meeting, Clinton said there are no immediate plans to bring more sanctions against Iran. Quoting Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Clinton said sanctions may be inevitable, but "we are not at that point yet." Clinton denied making any specific requests of the Kremlin regarding possible sanctions. She added that Russian and U.S. leaders would prefer if Iran could work out a solution to the nuclear controversy through diplomatic means, such as allowing the UN's nuclear watchdog to inspect its uranium enrichment facilities. Tehran agreed to give UN inspectors access to a newly disclosed uranium enrichment plant during an October 1st meeting with the U.S. and five other world powers in Geneva.
