Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 @03:53pm CDT (Chicago, IL) -- American Airlines announced a wide range of fare hikes Tuesday and now other carriers are following along.
The American price increases bump round-trip fares as much as 16-dollars on many routes. Continental, Southwest, Delta and United Airlines have done the same. Rick Seaney, Chief Executive of Farecompare.com said it is the fourth fare hike of the year. He said, quote, "most airfare hike attempts occur late in the week and either stick or fizzle over the weekend." That's when other carriers either match hikes or hold back. He added it is unusual to see an airfare hike early in the week. The latest fare hikes follow a recently implemented ten-dollar surcharge each-way for holiday travel.
