Thursday, Oct 22, 2009 @11:47am CDT (Washington, DC) -- Arizona Senator John McCain has introduced legislation that would block the Federal Communications Commission from enacting rules to regulate the internet.
The bill was introduced as FCC leaders meet to determine whether the free flow of information should be regulated by the federal government. McCain says he's introducing the legislation in an attempt to keep the internet innovative, which he says will create more high-paying technology jobs. McCain's legislation is a counter-offensive against the so-called "net neutrality" movement. Proponents of net neutrality accuse Internet service providers of unfairly restricting Internet traffic to some sites in order to boost traffic to others within their own networks. The chairman of the FCC recently proposed new rules to prevent ISPs from "discriminating" against Internet sites or applications. The proposed rules also call on ISPs to be transparent about their practices. That was prompted after one service provider put the brakes on peer-to-peer data transfers without telling their customers.
