  • Update: Halloween Homicides
    Reported by: Joelle Parks

    Monday, Nov 2, 2009 @06:20pm CST

Police have been interviewing witnesses all day and although extra police presence in schools added some security, they still have no one in custody for the Halloween homicides

“It's kinda scary, you know thinking about it,” says Guilford High School Parent Florine Johnson.

As the parent of a Guilford High School student,  Florine Johnson says she was devastated when she heard about the  deaths of two teenagers over the weekend.

“I’m  deeply concerned and ill be praying for the school system and everything,” says Johnson.

The shooting happened at this house on Kilburn Avenue early Sunday morning.  You can still see the bullet holes in the wall.  The crime scene is now marked by a memorial on the sidewalk.  Police say about 100 people were there, when a fight broke out and the shootings took place.

“At the current time we know two people were killed during the incident and at least two others were shot and sustained non life threatening injuries,” says Rockford Deputy Police Chief Greg Lindmark.

The victims have been identified as 19-year-old Nathan Melendez-Torrance and 16-year-old Deangelo Link.  Link was a student at Guilford.

Increased security was added at Guilford and Auburn high schools, along with the Fresh Start Campus at Page Park.

“What we don’t want to happen is a spillover from the schools and some tragic event happen there that’s why we've been working hand and hand with the school dist and we've been very open with the info we've obtained so they can take precautionary measures which they have,” says Lindmark.

The extra officers put some students and parents at ease.

“They seem like they're really concerned about the children so I’m proud of them for doing that,” says Johnson.

Johnson is glad her son was safe at home Saturday night.

“I think its kinda sad because I really don’t think teenagers should be partying, you know at that age,” says Johnson.

But other teenagers were not and police are relying on them for answers

“There are many people in our belief that know exactly what happened and its very important that they come forward,” says Lindmark.

Police say they are looking for numerous suspects, since the shots came from two different guns.  Anyone with information is encouraged to call Rockford Police.
