Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @09:25am CST (Glendale, AZ) -- A 20-year-old woman who was allegedly run down by her father because she'd become "too westernized" has died of her injuries.
Forty-eight-year-old Faleh Hassan Almaleki of Glendale, Arizona, is accused of running over his daughter, Noor, and another woman with his SUV on October 20th. Authorities describe the crime as an "honor killing." Charges against Almaleki include two counts of aggravated assault but he's now expected to be charged with murder. He's being held on five-million-dollars' bond. Almaleki fled the U.S. following the alleged attack. He went to Mexico City and then flew to London, but was detained by British officials and extradited to the U.S. last week. Prosecutors say he admitted running down his daughter, claiming she brought shame on him and his family. So-called honor killings are an accepted part of society in Iraq. Family members are allowed to end the life of a woman who shames them by failing to follow Muslim or Iraqi values. In this case, the dead woman married a man in Iraq but returned to Arizona to live with a boyfriend and his mother in the Phoenix area. The other victim of the hit-and-run incident was the boyfriend's mother who was injured.
