Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @09:32am CST (Chicago) -- The top two Democrats in the race for Illinois Governor have a new area to disagree.
Governor Pat Quinn has proposed a TV commercial truce, but his opponent Comptroller Dan Hynes isn't interested. Hynes says he won't pull his latest campaign ad, even though Quinn is offering to pull a commercial that accuses Hynes of walking away from the state during a time of need. The Quinn spot slams Hynes for going to a "spa" and "on vacation" while lawmakers were still working on a budget last year. The ad is very negative, and is being criticized across the state. Governor Quinn pitched the idea that both he and Hynes pull back from TV commercials. But Hynes says he's not walking away from anything. A spokesman says quote, "We will continue to run our campaign based on a discussion of the central issue facing the state of Illinois and its future, the budget crisis. Pat Quinn is free to continue talking about haircuts." Hynes and Quinn are quickly spending through their campaign war chests, and quickly escalating a battle for votes in February. The winner of their contest will go on to face a GOP challenger in the November election.
