Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @09:43am CST (Tehran) -- On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the storming of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iranian police are saying only anti-American rallies will be condoned, while other protest rallies will be, quote, "illegal" and "strongly confronted." Radical Iranian students took the U.S. embassy during the 1979 Islamic revolution, taking 52 Americans hostage and holding them for 444 days.
The move to make rallies illegal comes after widespread outrage and protest over the disputed June 12th presidential election sparked riots and unrest for weeks in Tehran. Losing presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi claimed the election was rigged to assure incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won. Mousavi has called on supporters to take to the streets Wednesday.
