Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @09:45am CST (San Francisco, CA) -- The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge closure cost the Metropolitan Transportation Commission a lot of money in lost toll revenue.
MTA officials say during the five days the structure was closed to traffic the agency lost one-point-nine-million dollars. The MTA says seven state-owned toll bridges in the Bay Area generate 113 million dollars annually which is used to cover operation and maintenance costs. The 73-year-old Bay Bridge which serves 270-thousand vehicles daily reopened to commuters Monday after shutting down last Tuesday when thousands of pounds of bridge parts dropped on vehicles, thankfully not causing any serious injuries. Caltrans crews, engineers and inspectors worked around the clock to repair the structure and ensure its safety for the driving public.
