Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @09:39am CST (Rockville, MD) -- The Food and Drug Administration isn't bowing to pressure from the tobacco industry and is enforcing a ban on flavored tobacco products.
The agency is also getting set to review menthol cigarettes, despite legal challenges from Reynolds American, Lorillard and other cigarette makers. Dr. Lawrence Deyton, the FDA's tobacco chief says lawsuits aren't slowing his effort against products that harm the public, especially children. The FDA Center for Tobacco Products, headed by Deyton, was established by Congress in June. It is charged with overseeing the manufacturing and marketing of cigarettes and other tobacco products. The agency can regulate ingredients and even set rules for advertising. In September, the agency banned cigarettes featuring flavors like cinnamon and chocolate that may appeal to children. The group plans to take a close look at menthol cigarettes next. Some critics claim the mint-like flavor may entice young people to try them. Deyton plans to create an advisory panel to provide input on the issue. The panel will include three representatives of the tobacco industry.
