Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @09:50am CST (Yangon) -- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met with detained Myanmar opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday.
Campbell also met with senior members of the regime, including Prime Minister Thein Sein during the trip. The high-level delegation is part of the Obama administration's ongoing efforts to reach out to the military junta in the nation also known as Burma. The talks are a follow-up to discussions last month in New York. Campbell's visit is the highest-level American contact with the regime since Madeleine Albright visited in 1995. Campbell is expected to push for the Burmese government to hold fair elections next year. The two-day visit has been described as a "fact-finding mission" for the U.S. Myanmar's vested interest lies in the West possibly lifting its crippling trade embargo.
