Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @10:10am CST (Kabul) -- The United Nations says it will evacuate hundreds of its international staff members out of Afghanistan due to deteriorating security conditions.
A UN spokesman says the world body will relocate about 600 of its roughly eleven-hundred international staff. Some will be moved to safer sites within Afghanistan and the rest withdrawn from the country temporarily. The move comes just one week after five UN foreign staffers were killed by militants in Kabul. The UN says the evacuations won't disrupt its operations in the war-torn country, but the evacuation could complicate President Obama's counter-insurgency war strategy. That strategy is expected to include more civilian assistance alongside extra troops.
