Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @01:44pm CST (Chipley, FL) -- The mother and the babysitter of a seven-month-old Florida girl have been arrested in connection with the child's brief disappearance.
Little Shannon Dedrick was found alive overnight in a small box under the babysitter's bed. According to Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock, Shannon's mother Chrystina Lynn Mercer reached an agreement with babysitter Susan Baker to permanently give her custody of her daughter. Just hours after the handover, however, Shannon was reported missing, launching a widespread search in the rural community in the Florida Panhandle. The baby was found unharmed inside a box well-hidden under Baker's bed. Haddock says both Baker and Mercer face charges of child neglect, interfering in child custody and filing false reports with police. Shannon was described as being in good health, but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Investigators from South Carolina have also traveled to Florida to determine if new evidence could help crack a cold case. Back in 1987, that same babysitter, Susan Baker, was convicted of abusing her step-daughter and suspected in the disappearance of her stepson in Beaufort. Paul Baker hasn't been seen in more than 20 years and authorities long considered Susan Baker a suspect in the child's disappearance.
