Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @08:47am CST (Benton Harbor, MI) -- Former Vice President Dick Cheney is offering his two-cents worth to President Obama on dealing with the Afghanistan war.
Speaking in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Cheney urged the President to commit enough troops to win the war saying hesitation would only embolden U.S. foes and devastate its allies. During a speech to a business group Cheney said "Our adversaries take heart from our hesitation and vacillation." The former Vice President and Secretary of Defense said Obama should follow the advice of his military commanders. They'd like to see another 40-thousand troops sent to Afghanistan. About the possibility that only ten-to-15-thousand troops might be added with a focus on training Afghan forces Cheney says "I'm worried the consideration of fewer troops may be a political one. I think that is wrong." Cheney also touched on the Iraq war saying withdrawing troops too quickly could cause problems. He said the U.S. has an "obligation" to protect the fledgling Iraqi democracy. Cheney closed saying "I'd be a lot more comfortable if the people in the Obama administration would realize we're at war. This is not a time to read the rights to some terrorist."
