Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @03:21pm CST (Orlando, FL) -- The man accused of bursting into his old office in a downtown Orlando high-rise says he opened fire in the building because, quote, "they left me to rot." Police arrested 40-year-old Jason Rodriguez at his mother's apartment hours after the shooting at Reynolds, Smith, & Hills that left one person dead and five others injured.
Authorities say the five shooting victims are in stable condition along with another person who suffered heart trouble in the panic that followed. Police say he entered the 16-story building around 11 a.m. and started shooting when he reached the offices of the firm that fired him in 2007. Nearby schools and businesses were put on lockdown and police even shut down the interstate highway that runs adjacent to the building for several hours while they mounted their search. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Governor Charlie Crist praised the quick and effective response to the emergency. Police have not yet listed all of the charges now pending against the suspect.
