Monday, Nov 9, 2009 @09:07am CST (Temple, TX) -- Texas Governor Rick Perry met several hospitalized victims of last Thursday's mass shooting at Fort Hood.
Perry visited patients at Scott and White Memorial Hospital on Saturday, and he says they were concerned about continuing to be able to serve this country. He also met with Sergeant Kimberly Munly, who shot and injured the shooting suspect. Perry called Munly a selfless public servant, and a true professional. Perry says to those whose lives have been shaken by the isolated incident, they must remember that it communicates less about the safety of society or the condition of the human soul, and much more about the way people watch out for their neighbors in trying times. Perry says in the days to come, the state will continue to support the families affected by the violence and the criminal investigation. The Texas Rangers are assisting federal officials with the ongoing investigation, and the governor has also directed the Department of State Health Services to send crisis counseling teams to the area to assist victims and their families. Perry also attended a Fort Hood prayer service in Killeen Sunday night. A memorial service will be held at Fort Hood on Tuesday for the victims of last Thursday's mass shooting. President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are scheduled to attend. Thirteen people, ranging in age from 19 to 62, were killed and at least 30 others were wounded when suspected gunman Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at the Army post. Hasan was wounded by Munly and is hospitalized in San Antonio.
