Monday, Nov 16, 2009 @08:55am CST (Lena) -- The Extreme Makeover home in Lena features some of the latest green technology on the market.
"The floors in the house are bamboo, so it's a quick, renewable resource," says Joey Stott, winner of the Extreme Makeover house. "The furniture is filled with the soy, which is great. And a lot of the wood is repurposed." There's also a retention pond outside the house that collects rainwater... which powers all of the outdoor pumps that the Stott family uses to water their gardens and tend to their animals. There's also a wind turbine on the property which generates electricity. And, the house doesn't have a typical furnace. Instead, it features a geothermal heating and cooling system. "In the summer, it pulls the hot air out of the house and pumps the cool air powered by the springs underground," Stott continues. "In the winter, it pulls the spring water, heats it up and then heats the home." Actor David Duchovny also helped plant an organic garden so the Stotts can grow all their own produce. And, the builders put in canning pantry off the kitchen so the family can preserve what they grow and make their own jams and jellies. |
