Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009 @09:15am CST Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the man accused in the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, requested that some of his patients be tried for war crimes based on what they disclosed to him in private psychiatric sessions.
The "Dallas Morning News" reports that other psychiatrists brought the possible doctor-patient confidentiality violations to base superiors. Meanwhile, ABC News is reporting that investigators believe Hasan's denied requests to have some of his patients prosecuted may have sparked the attack. Captain Shannon Meehan told the "Dallas Morning News" that he questioned Hasan's work approach and was skeptical of his request. Meehan said he had avoided Hasan because, quote, "I heard he was not one you wanted to go to," adding, quote, "Apparently the reason it took so long is he was turning it over to legal." In reference to the soldiers' postwar visits to Hasan, Meehan said, quote, "They're going in there confessing their pain and their guilt. He's trying to turn it into a war crime." The November 5th shooting left 13 dead and 29 wounded. Hasan was shot by police officers and remains in a San Antonio military hospital paralyzed from the waist down.
