Tuesday, Nov 17, 2009 @10:40am CST Following their successful launch yesterday, the crew of Space Shuttle Atlantis will spend most of the day looking for any signs to damage that may have occurred during their climb into orbit.
The procedure has been the same since shuttle flights resumed following the 2003 Columbia tragedy. The astronauts will use the shuttle's robotic arm to move high-resolution scanners across the most sensitive parts of the shuttle's wings and underbelly looking for signs of damage. Engineers back on the ground will pore over the data before clearing the shuttle for reentry. After today's scans are completed, astronauts will get ready for a rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station on Wednesday.
