(Fairfax County, VA) -- The wife of Indiana Republican Senator Richard Lugar has been arrested for DWI and hit and run in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Seventy-two-year-old Charlene Lugar was stopped by police along Old Dominion Drive in McLean Wednesday evening after an officer noticed smoke coming from her car which had front end damage.

The "Washington Post" reports police spokesman Officer Bud Walker says the officer at the scene found probable cause that Lugar was intoxicated and arrested her.

Walker says the officer investigated the damage on Lugar's car and determined that she had hit another car on a nearby road.

Lugar was taken to jail and given a breathalyzer test.

A statement has been released by Senator Lugar's office which says, quote, "no other persons were in her car or the unattended car she hit.

Thankfully, no one was injured. We are deeply sorry and embarrassed that this accident has occurred."
