There's a dental treatment that straightens your teeth without using braces.
The Invisalign system consists of a series of precisely calibrated, clear aligners that gradually reposition teeth.
"You'll wear the aligner all day, but can remove it to eat, brush, rinse and floss," says Dr. Kris Tumilowicz with Dental Dimensions.
Week by week your teeth will move a little bit at a time. "About every two weeks you'll replace the aligners with the next in the series," he says.
You'll have to visit the dentist every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as expected.
Treatment time can vary. "Typically it takes about six to nine months to complete the whole system," he says. "But it can take up to a year."
To start treatment, your dentist will need to take impressions of your teeth, a bite registration, and x-rays. Then those materials are sent to Invisalign.
"From those measurements they create a 3-D model of your mouth and use a computer program that displays movement of teeth from start to finish," he says.
Because the aligners are nearly invisible, they're more attractive than traditional braces. They're also much less likely than braces to irritate your gums, cheek or tongue.
