Reported by: Nicole Kilmer Monday, Jul 20, 2009 @07:27pm CDT Green wine is here. Vineyard owners are using eco-friendly ideas to save on expenses. This is the Black Ankle Winery. "Not only are we energy efficient, you can nearly eliminate heating and cooling in this building," says Ed Boyce of Black Ankle Winery. The vineyard started "going green" with its new tasting room. "A lot of things we are doing are not more expensive, they are not harder to do, they're actually not even new technology they are old,” explains Boyce The building was made of locally milled wood. Straw bales were used for insulation. That alone could save 75% on heating and cooling. Black Ankle's owners also saved big on labor. In exchange for hard work volunteers learned how to build. The reward is a vineyard in a much cleaner environment. The winery hopes that pays off. |
