  • Positive Change May Be On The Way For Chrysler's Belvid...
    Reported by: Jewell Hillery

    Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009 @07:29pm CST

In June, Fiat bought out Chrysler after the struggling automaker nearly collapsed. But some hope for the local plant could be on the way.

Renita Roden, Belvidere's Chamber of Commerce President says, "it's hard to say what Fiat has in mind, and what they are thinking about, but, it would be great if we could have the second shift back."

Now, Belvidere's Mayor Fred Brereton will meet with Fiat's CEO on Wednesday. Roden says the meeting can go in one of two directions.

Roden says, "the mayor can go out there and find out that Fiat is keeping the plant open, making changes," or, "the second item could be they're closing it."

But Roden doesn't think that's the case. "I don't think they would have invited him if it was bad news."

During the meeting. Fiat officials are expected to discuss their new inventory and the plan for Chrysler through 2014. And for those who travel through Belvidere regularly, the mayor's trip is a good thing.

Concerned citizen Dan Trebtow, says, "I think anything's a good idea to keep Chrysler afloat, obviously or increase their business." Dan hopes some of that good news drives towards Belvidere. "I think a lot of people are looking for psychological positive news, so even if something something doesn't happen right away, I think you know it'd stimulate positive feelings."

Roden agrees. "For the economy, in a whole, in this community, everything drives from Chrysler, property taxes, that type of thing, so it's very important to have that business here." Mayor Brereton is scheduled back into town on Thursday.
