(Rockford) -- The region's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit just got bigger.
On Wednesday, officials from Rockford Memorial Hospital cut ribbon on the new NICU addition. The new area, called the NICU Annex, holds six beds, bringing the total number of NICU beds to 44.
The NICU Annex is designed with sound absorbing ceiling tiles and wallpaper to help keep the unit quieter. Lighting in the new area is able to be individualized at each bedside and curtains for privacy are also around each bed.
More than 550 newborns are cared for annually in Rockford Memorial's NICU. The unit is a regional referral center for 11 counties in northern Illinois. -
