  • Part 3: Inside Mayor Morrissey's Home
    Reported by: Katie Crowther

    Thursday, Nov 5, 2009 @08:38pm CST

For the past two days, we've taken you on the job with Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey. In the final part of our series, we're showing you what he considers his most important role, as he lets a camera crew inside his home for the first time.

Mayor Morrissey is always on the go. Whether attending events, or catching up at City Hall.

Since becoming mayor a little more than four years ago, many of the challenges Morrissey faces on a daily basis remain the same. But his personal life, has changed a lot.

Besides mayor, he's also now a father and husband. He and his wife Stacy have been married for two years. Their baby daughter Sophia Marie is nine-months old. And Seanna, the mayor's step-daughter, is 10.

Just like the city he represents, his family has experienced some tough times. His newborn son, Michael, passed away last year after health complications. But they've grown as a family from the experience.

He's also learned how to go from answering the tough questions of voters, to the tough questions at home.

"Do you want a little couscous with that?" Stacy asks, as the Mayor warms up his dinner.

The change has brought a whole new dimension to his work.

"I had to cancel a few afternoon meetings this week to take Sophia to a doctor's appointment," he describes. "And my wife had to stay home with Seanna."

And like most parents, he sometimes find it hard to balance home and work.

"I get home at 7, 8, or 9 and I'm tired," he admits. "I still want to spend time with my wife and children. Yet, I still might think I have emails I need to check. You fall asleep somewhere in the process."

"Sometimes he's home for dinner, or he'll stop home for lunch when he's able to, for like five minutes," Stacy adds.

Business trips have also gotten a little harder. Just last month, he spent 10 days in China, trying to attract foreign companies to invest here.

"I missed my family a lot when I was over there," he says. "It's hard being away from the baby."

But he says having a family has helped him as mayor, because in his daughters is even more reason to make Rockford's future better.

"We really hope we're building the type of future that's going to make this a great place for them to want to grow up in and stay in," he says. "It's a dream every family has. To leave the future for their children better than how they had it."
