  • Three Fatal Shootings In One Week
    Reported by: Jewell Hillery

    Saturday, Nov 7, 2009 @06:02pm CST

Today's sunshine is a contrast to the grim picture that Georgia McKinney and her grandson paint of what happened just a day ago.

"We heard about 5 or 6 shots and then we kind of waited a minute because we didn't know what to do," says McKinney.

Friday night around 8:00PM, police were called to the intersection of Morgan and Ferguson. That's where they found Marty Flint.

Police say Flint dropped someone off at the store behind me, when that person was inside the store, they heard gunshots ring out, they came outside and saw Flint shot in his van right here.

Deputy Police Chief, Mike Booker says, "upon arrival officers police discovered a white male, 26 years-old lying partially inside and partially outside the vehicle."

"I took his pulse and at the time he was still alive and I was trying to keep him awake," says McKinney.

Flint's murder is the third this week. The violence started last weekend when sixteen year-old D'Angelo Link and 19-year-old Nathan Melendez-Torrance were shot at a Halloween party. Police haven't charged anyone in the shootings.

"We're still in the preliminary stages of this investigation, we're still speaking to a lot of people," says Deputy Chief Mike Booker.

This sudden surge in senseless shootings is inspiring many in the community to come together. Former Ceasefire member, Anthony Harris helped form S.W.A.T. He's trying to get more people to join the fight against violence and gangs.

"We have life skills training, we do anger management groups, we have different types of counseling," says Harris.

S.W.A.T reaches out to inner city kids and encourages them to stay off the streets. "Everytime I hear about a murder, it touches my heart, it's out of control," says Harris.

McKinney finds it just as heartbreaking. She says her neighborhood is changing for the worse...right before her eyes.

"I have my grandson living with me and it's a safety concern, and this is something I don't want him exposed too."

Police aren't saying whether they believe last night's shooting is tied to the shootings from last weekend.
