  • "The Real Glee"
    Reported by: Jewell Hillery

    Wednesday, Nov 11, 2009 @05:58pm CST

The Fox hit series "Glee" is bringing new popularity to singing clubs. Each week, viewer's are mesmerized by the laughs, drama and music that fill the halls of McKinley High School.

That same passion for music echoes through Rock Valley College's Performance Arts Room, every Tuesday and Thursday.

Those beautiful voices make up RVC's women's choir. The group began as a "Glee Club" three years ago, under the passionate instruction of conductor Paul Laprade. Laprade says he's not sure where his passion for music comes from, but he says "I always knew I wanted to be a musician."

Laprade's conducted at alot of schools over the past twenty years. And he's pleased to see that shows like "Glee," are spreading his passion with the masses. The musician says, "Glee is kind of a symptom, you get a show because something is going on and so it's really neat to see that happening."

While characters from the show don't always get along, Laprade says those types of outbursts typically don't take place in these choral halls. "I have to say, there's a little less drama here than on the show,"says Laprade.

The conductor is preparing the ladies for an upcoming performance. He makes it look so easy, I figured I'd give it a try. "Typically, it takes atleast six years to become a conductor, but after being her today, I think I've got some of the basics."

Laprade says, "taking those wonderful words and having music to it is a charm, something very different and a stretch for all of us."

One thing that's not a stretch for this group is their deep love for music. While many of the ladies are music majors, more than half of the choir just sings for fun. Student Tess Morris says, "I do this for a hobby and I feel like, it really enriches my life."

Kara Jackson says, "the music that we do is absolutely amazing and its a huge part of why I'm here, that's why I enjoy coming to school."

That musical connection is the top note Laprade is looking for.
