(Rockford, Illinois) The Rockford Fire Department put on a demonstration of the effectiveness of residential sprinkler systems Tuesday. Two rooms were set on fire and the one with the sprinkler system showed much less damage, mainly from water damage. Rockford Fire Department Division Chief of Fire Prevention Frank Schmitt was at the demonstration and said the additional cost of the sprinkler system was well worth the cost and adds, "So they are very reasonable when you consider they are like having a fire fighter in your house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." Fire department officials also announced they have received a 28 thousand dollar grant from the Department of Homeland Security. The money will be used to help pay for one thousand smoke detectors.
