  • EAA1414 Grand Opening
    EAA1414 Grand Opening - “Miracle on the Hudson” Pilot to be guest of honor at Grand Opening Poplar Grove, IL – March 28, 2013 Mr. Jeff Skiles will be the guest of honor at the Grand Opening of the Northern Illinois Aviation Resource Center Hangar which is operated by the Experimental Aircraft Chapter 1414 (EAA 1414) located at the Poplar Grove Airport. Mr. Skiles is presently the EAA Vice-President of Chapters and Youth Education. He was also the First-Officer on US Airways flight 1549 out of New York’s La Guardia airport on January 15, 2009 when, shortly after take-off, they struck some birds and eventually landed in the Hudson River. This event is widely known as the “The Miracle on the Hudson”. The Grand Opening will be held on May 19, 2013 from 7:00 am– 1:00pm and the official ribbon cutting will be held at 9:30 am. Mr. Skiles will make a presentation about EAA’s history and his Hudson River experience at 10:00am. He will also be available throughout the day for personal conversations. In conjunction with the Grand Opening, EAA 1414 will be hosting a fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast and offering free introduction to aviation airplane rides to youth ages 8 – 17. There will be a demonstration of remote controlled airplanes and also hot air balloon rides along with many other activities. All these flying activities are weather dependent of course. EAA Chapter 1414 was founded in January, 2005 by a small group of enthusiasts to share the spirit of aviation with each other and community This new facility will allow them to greatly expand their ability to carry out that mission and reach even more people than before. In addition EAA 1414 offers scholarships to individuals to assist them in their flight education. From its inception, EAA 1414 has been conducting fundraising events and securing donations to fund the building of this new facility. Official ground breaking was held on July 27, 2012. Since then, many chapter members have graciously given of their time and talents to bring the hangar to completion. It is now time to share their accomplishments with everyone.     Let Freedom Ring - The Rockford Christian Fellowship Band will present its spring concert at First Evangelical Covenant Church at 316 Wood Road in Rockford on Sunday, May 19, beginning at 4 pm. The theme of the concert is “Let Freedom Ring” and selections will include inspirational hymns, WWII big band and swing music, marches, and a special tribute to our troops and veterans. Special guest vocalist Ruth Snyder will also be featured. There is no charge to attend the concert. Free will donations will be collected. Refreshments and a time of fellowship will follow the performance. The Rockford Christian Fellowship Band is a 40-piece? community concert band with a Christian ministry, located in Rockford, IL. The band was organized in 1985 by Fred M. Hubbell and is conducted by George E. Strombeck, assisted by Vicki Peterson. The band consists of dedicated Christian musicians representing many churches in the Northern Illinois region. The band performs at community events, churches, and retirement centers and is known for its rousing marches, inspirational music, and music appropriate for the occasion and season.     FINDING FAITH - Gateway Community Church will be screening a new faith and friendly film called FINDING FAITH on May 19, 2013 at 9:00 AM. Gateway Community Church will also be hosting the star of the film, Erik Estrada in the screening. Erik Estrada is best known for his leading role in the television series ChiP's. Since that program, he has appeared in a long list of movies, television shows, and reality programs. Estrada is also the National Celebrity Spokesman for the Safe Surfin' Foundation the creators of the film FINDING FAITH. The film FINDING FAITH is a full-length narrative motion picture that tells the true story of how a family found "Faith" in their battle to find and rescue their fourteen-year old daughter "Faith" who accidentally falls victim to an online predator. FINDING FAITH highlights the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force edge-of-your seat efforts to rescue children from predators, often right before these children come to great harm. Even the tightest families and most guarded parents cannot stop predators who have perfected their evil trade. The film is based entirely on true events and observations from experts. It will wake parents, educators and concerned citizens to how our children are being targeted. The screening at Gateway Community Church is part of a National Awareness Tour, Estrada and the film's creator and Executive Director for the Safe Surfin" Foundation are doing to bring consciousness to this issue. In today's world, pretty much all parents have had the conversation about technology and the challenges in keeping our kids protected online or on their smart phones.
