Alex Delgado was shot to death on June 22, 2007. He was only seventeen years old. His killer remains at large, as his family waits for justice.
As the three-year anniversary of his death approaches, investigators still have no leads or suspects in custody.
His father, is left questioning the senseless murder. "What could make anybody kill somebody?" Mike Delgado asks. "I know somebody knows something. Somebody has to. I wish that person would come forward and talk to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department."
"It's like a fresh wound, it never heals," says Alex's stepmom, Michelle Lynch. "It just keeps opening again and again."
Alex was shot on Garver Avenue, near West State Street. He was walking home from a friend's house late at night. Some neighbors say they heard the gunshot, but no one saw who pulled the trigger.
"I miss holding him and talking to him," Mike says. "It's really hard. I miss just spending time with him. The little things."
It's been equally hard for Alex's young stepbrother, Josh.
"That was his big brother," Michelle says. "He loved everything about him. They did a lot together. Now, we take balloons to his grave every year on his birthday. He's thought about every day. That will never go away."
They hope their pain can be a wake up call for others.
"Often we take things for granted," Mike says. "Never take anything for granted. Especially life, never take life for granted. Never."
The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department says Delgado's murder is still an open and active investigation.
