(Somerville, NJ) -- A New Jersey woman has filed a lawsuit against the Somerset Medical Center, claiming she was denied medical treatment because of her religion.
Rona Mohammedi, a practicing Muslim, says she went to the medical facility on February 11th with severe chest pains, and when told she would need an electrocardiogram, she asked for a female to conduct the test.
Mohammedi says she believes it is her religious duty to maintain modesty before men she doesn't know, which is why she asked for a woman to take care of the EKG test.
She says instead of meeting her request, the hospital didn't treat her for five hours and left her in the emergency room until her husband asked for a transfer.
She's suing the medical center for discrimination and violating the Patient Bill of Rights.
Lawyers for the hospital deny Mohammedi's claims and say she was appropriately informed of her options and left the facility against medical advice.
