(Washington, DC) -- The White House has wasted no time responding to the leak of more than 91-thousand previously classified documents related to the war in Afghanistan.
The Obama administration is calling the leak by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks.org and publication by "The New York Times" and others "irresponsible." Titled the "Afghan War Diary," the documents indicate American and NATO troops are being attacked, killed and wounded in Afghanistan with the cooperation of Pakistani intelligence agents.
The "Times" says the documents suggest that Pakistan allows representatives of its spy service to meet with the Taliban to organize militant groups that fight against American and NATO soldiers in Afghanistan.
The documents, including military reports from the field in Afghanistan, cover a period between January 2004 and December 2009.
Release of the documents comes at a time when the U.S. government is pouring billions of dollars into both nations in an effort to defeat the Taliban and root out al-Qaeda leaders thought to be hiding along the Pakistan-Afghan border.
The Pakistani government denies it's cooperating with the Taliban.
White House National Security Adviser James Jones issued a statement saying, quote, "The United States strongly condemns the disclosure of classified information by individuals and organizations, which could put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk and threaten our national security." James says Wikileaks made no effort to contact anyone in the government about the documents.
He admitted the government learned about the flood of war documents from news organizations.
The documents are available at WikiLeaks.org
