Senate Plans Vote On Free Birth Control Coverage

By: Colin Clarke
Updated: March 2, 2012
(Washington, DC)  --  The U.S. Senate will vote today on a Republican sponsored measure that would exempt employers from a rule requiring free birth control coverage in workplace health plans.
The Obama healthcare rule forces nearly all employers who offer health insurance to provide coverage for women's contraceptives free of copays and deductibles.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has issued a news release urging the Senate to vote against the plan claiming it would "allow employers that have no religious affiliation to exclude coverage of any health service, no matter how important."  Sebelius says decisions about medical care should be made by a woman and her doctor, not a woman and her boss.
It's expected the measure will be defeated.
