Freeport - The city Housing Authority announces a new scholarship fund to help students after high school.
The authority's first annual scholarship luncheon was held today at Highland Community College. The fund is being named after Dr. Peter Flynn, who is retiring as the Freeport School Superintendent.
Flynn spent 12 years leading the district. The Housing Authority says they're happy so many people showed up and offered support. "I'm super excited. We actually sold out the room" says FHA Executive Director, Larry Williams. "Over 240 people here and it was an honor for me because Peter Flynn is one of my mentors. So, it was an honor for me to dedicate the scholarship in his name."
Scholarships will be awarded to high school graduates who live in the FHA buildings. It'll also help students pay for certifications, training, and trade school tuition.
