June 20, 2012 (ROCKFORD) Efforts to redevelop the Tapco building failed a number of times, which is why city leaders say it was time to move ahead with the project by tearing it down.

Located on South Main Street, the building has been in the center of downtown Rockford for almost 100 years.

City leaders say, the building caused a number of problems for neighboring residents with materials crumbling off of the building.

But for now, the soon to be empty space will serve as an expansion for Davis Park.

"We'll put together additional economic development plan. We've done a revitalization strategy for South Main. You know this really is the founder's landing in this general area... The birth place for the City of Rockford," said Rockford's Capital Program Manager Patrick Zuroske.

The demolition process is expected to be done by Labor Day.
