Now a local group is fighting to change that. The Rockford Tea Party has collected nearly 2000 signatures and they're urging the Winnebago county board to legalize concealed carry.

Although a local law can't trump existing state law, the tea party hopes they can generate enough buzz for state leaders to change their minds.

Rockford Tea Party Coordinator Bob Mlsna says "they demand the right to protect their families, and they want their elected officials to step up... do the right thing or when election time comes around... this huge amount of public is going to remember who's holding them back."

Illinois is the only state without a concealed carry law, although it's also outlawed in the District of Columbia.
