Thanks to federal and state grants a new fiber optic network will be created for several counties in the area, including Winnebago promising a faster experience online.

The iFiber Project will connect local governments, schools, libraries, and health institutions with the service. Construction is already underway. Officials say it'll lead to economic growth.

Rockford Information Technology Director Glenn Trommels said "it's really going to be a driver for economic development. The initial focus is hooking up community anchor institutions, but we really see it as an economic development driver for hooking up private institutions down the road."

The next step for the Rockford City Council is to agree on a contract agreement to participate in the new internet network.
