Rockford - The Nicholas Conservatory gets a little greener.

Construction is just getting started on the building's new green roof.  It'll feature dozens of plants spanning 4,300 square feet.  Not only that, it'll act as an insulator to keep the conservatory cool in the summer or warm in the winter.

It'll also help reduce storm water runoff and when it's done it can be seen from from a viewing pad.  The green roof should be complete by next week.  It'll put the conservatory one step closer to receiving LEED Certification, which means it'll be recognized as a building that's environmentally responsible and a healthy place to be.
