Rockford - The retirement of State Representative Dave Winters (R) is a curveball for the two candidates vying to replace him.

John Cabello (R) and Carl Wasco (D) will face each other in the November election.  But, Winters' early departure means the Winn. Co. Republican Party needs to appoint a replacement and the party chairman says Cabello will most likely be that person.  "I think he has the type of skill set that is necessary to be the appropriate representative for the 68th" says party chairman, James Thompson.

We caught up with Wasco and asked if he thinks the retirement and potential appointment gives Cabello an edge in the election.  "I'm not worried about the advantages" says Wasco.  "I've got a campaign to run.  I've got voters to meet with and I'll be out talking to them.  We're going to let the voters decide."

Cabello's appointment could come within the next few days.
