Rockford, Illinois- In Rockford Wednesday, La Voz Latina hoped to help clear things up. They called in Diego Bonesatti from the Illinois Coalition of Immigration and Refugee Rights.
At an impromptu demonstration Monday, tensions were heightened by rumors of immigration services looking for undocumented residents in Rockford.
"A lot of people are freaked out," says "Bonesatti. "It`s difficult when you have these rumors come out."
Bonesatti was called in by La Voz Latina to tell people what really happened this week.
It was not immigration, but reportedly U.S. marshals who scared people.
"There have been arrests, but it is the U.S. marshals who are picking up people who have outstanding warrants," says Bonesatti. "If they don`t have an outstanding warrant, if they don`t have an order of deportation, marshals aren`t after them."
The U.S Marshals Office could not be reached to confirm Bonesatti`s report.
But still, there was a sense of relief in the crowd at La Voz Latina.
"It`s a good thing it was not immigration," says Rockford resident Armando Cardenas. "I think people are feeling better at least they understand what happened."
"You have to look for information before deciding not to go to work and there`s information out there," says Rockford resident Ingrid Gonzalez.
Bonesatti also informed immigrants of their rights and what could happen with the pending change in federal legislation.
