breaking news
Rockford, IL - A handy neighbor fixed the Nonthaveth familys front door on Sunday afternoon.
The family has lived in their house at 1433 Charles St. for 15 years. They say what happened at 5 a.m. is something theyll never forget.
"Nobody opened the door for him, nobody opened the door," says Taeng Nonthaveth, the home owner. "He just kicked the door in."
"I was sleeping and the next thing you know I heard a whole bunch of yelling," says Peter Nonthaveth, 19-years-old. "I thought I was dreaming at first."
He says an intruder broke down the front door and went upstairs to his bedroom.
"He was like, `Are you that guy, are you that guy who drives a black car?`, and other things that I can`t say," says Peter. "And then, the next thing you know, when I called my dad, he stabbed me, and ran downstairs and threw his knife."
"My son called me, `Dad, Dad!`" says Taeng, "Then I grabbed the phone and called the police."
He grabbed his baseball bat to help protect his son, but the intruder already ran out the front door and down Charles St. to allegedly invade another home.
"I tell my wife, I tell my son, I tell my daughter, everybody have a baseball bat put under your pillow," says Taeng.
But that fails to reassure Peter. Although his scars may fade, his fear runs deeper.
"I`m still in pain, but I`m still scared," says Peter. "I mean, he broke in the door, my own house, and you can easily break into anything."
Peter received eight stitches in his arm this afternoon and was then released from Swedish American Hospital.
According to police, 41-year-old Dellace C. Holten, Jr. allegedly broke into the Nonthaveth home and stabbed Peter.
Holten then allegedly broke into another home at 1604 10th Ave. and stole a van.
Police say Holten was seen driving the stolen van after he broke a window of a home at 2028 21st St.
Police chased him for about six hours and arrested him without incident at the intersection of Sandyhollow Rd. and 11th St. around 11 a.m.
Holten is charged with home invasion, aggravated battery and assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, and criminal damage to property. He is being held on $301,000 bond in the Winnebago County Jail.
