(Rockford, Illinois) The Winnebago County Board of Health meets Tuesday night to discuss efforts to make Rockford a smokeless community.
Health experts say in Illinois alone 2,900 people die every year from second hand smoke.
Local officials say studies have shown there`s no longer any debate on the positive effects of a smokeless environment and are hoping to convince Rockford city leaders to move in that direction.
Dave Riggs, Regional Vice President of the American Cancer Society supports the effort to make Rockford a smokeless community and says, "Education, education, education. Was it Lincoln who said let the people know the facts and the country will be saved. I believe once the people know the facts they`ll make the decision to be supportive of a smoke free community."
Studies have shown that cigarettes cause more than one in five American deaths.
