New Program Seeks to Counsel Truant Students

Teachers used to warn that skipping class only hurt yourself.
Not anymore.
"Back in those times it was thought to be a school problem," said United Way`s Martha Coats. "Now we recognize truancy is actually a community problem."
Officials say when students skip, it increases the drop-out rate, draws on social welfare, and costs the school district extra money.
