breaking news
Rockford- School Choice is underway in the Rockford School District.
Parents have started signing up their children for kindergarten.
Tuesday, parents and children lined the offices and hallways at Roosevelt Community Education Center.
The wait to pick their top schools for kindergarten was more than two hours.
Parents don`t have to wait in long lines.
They have until February 16th to sign up.
Because schools are decided by a computer lottery, administrators say applying early does not increase the chance of getting the school parents want.
This could be the last year for the choice system.
The school board is considering using attendance zones. Under that plan, the school a child goes to would be determined by where they live.
Surveys of parents, especially minority parents, show many want to keep the ability to choose thier child`s school.
Of the more than 1,600 students who applied last year, 83% percent got their top choice.
Parents should know by April what school their child will attend.
