McCain Applauds Reported Death Of Gaddafi

By: Colin Clarke
Updated: October 20, 2011

(Washington, DC)  --  Senator John McCain is cheering reports of the death of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
In a statement, the Arizona Republican said the Libyan people have "liberated their country."  Gaddafi is reported to have been either killed or captured in a raid on his hometown of Sirte as he tried to flee in a convoy.

An official with Libya's National Transitional Council says NATO warplanes carried out an airstrike on the convoy.
The U.S. joined the NATO military operation in the spring, aimed at undermining Gaddafi and curbing the dictator's assaults on the Libyan people.
Senator McCain said the U.S. and allies must continue supporting the Libyan people "as they work to make the next phase of their democratic revolution as successful as the fight to free their country."
