Byron, Illinois- A radioactive spill at the Byron nuclear power plant has spread farther than first reported.
Additional tests show tritium, a byproduct of nuclear energy, has now been found in groundwater on company property.
The radioactive substance was located near discharge water pipes that run from the plant to the Rock River.
Exelon officials say the tritium levels are well below federal limits and pose no health hazard.
Also, tests of drinking water wells at nine homes closest to the plant`s property line were negative.
The company says it will continue efforts to find out the size of contaminated areas.
