Rockford - One day after the nation celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his niece comes to the Stateline.

"We want comfort and safety for everyone from conception to natural death" says Dr. Alveda King, pro-life activist and niece of the civil rights leader.  "That means a better economy, better schools, we want babies to be born and have happy lives, good marriages, and family."

King spoke against abortion at the Booker Washington Center this morning.  Many advocates say they're just picking up the civil rights movement where its leader left off.  "Protecting the rights of the weak is what civil rights was all about" says Allan Carlson, President of the Howard Center.  "There's no weaker and more threatened group than unborn children."

Recently, Rockford's only abortion clinic was shut down for safety violations.  Despite getting approval to reopen, the Northern Illinois Women's Center decided to remain closed.
