(Rockford, Illinois) A major cleanup is underway that should benefit Rockford's west side. ComEd is beginning the process of tearing down the former Rock River Valley Food Pantry complex and remove the soil underneath it. Tthe reason is ComEd use to own that property, and they say they want to be a good neighbor and make sure any environmental issues are taken care of. The location near Avon and Chestnut Streets was home to a "gas manufacturing" plant way back in 1899 to 1947. When the plant shut down a tar like residue that was left over from the manufacturing process remained and was stored in underground vaults. Comed eventually took over the property and used it as their regional operations complex until the 1980's.
Now they want to make sure any possible damage to the soil is cleanup up.
The project is exepcted to last about one year and is being described as a "multi-million" dollar project.
