Rockford - Local police officers run the extra mile to help raise money for the Special Olympics.

It's part of the 26th running of the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch run, a 1,500 mile journey through the Prairie State.  Officers from the Rockford, Loves Park, South Beloit, and the Park District police departments ran about 70 of those miles today, torch in hand, from South Beloit all the way to Mendota.

"It's just great" says Lt. Patrick Hoey of the Rockford Police Dept.  "It really inspires the officers.  It inspires the athletes to go for gold.  So, we're glad to partner with Special Olympics."

Officers hope to raise more than $3 million.  They fell just short of that goal at last year's run.
