The senate passed a $109-billion measure earlier this year. Without a new bill, or an extension of the current law highway funds will run out on June 30, 2012.

Durbin said passing the bill would create thousands of construction jobs across the state.

"If the federal government cuts off its money because the house can't pass a bill, it means that construction projects, repair projects, widening programs, strengthening bridges... goes to a halt in our state," said Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.

Negotiations between Illinois' house and the senate are continuing.
